Ketamine-Assisted Therapy

In my formal Ketamine-Assisted Therapy practice, I draw upon 25 years of trauma-informed care and specialized training to offer therapeutic experiences with ketamine, and other psychedelics as they become medically available in Colorado. My approach integrates modalities such as Internal Family Systems, Somatic Experiencing, advanced EMDR, art therapy, and Jungian practices, which allow us to delve into the profound healing potential of ketamine. I tailor these sessions to support individuals facing developmental trauma, adult-onset PTSD, treatment-resistant depression, and complex life challenges, creating a gentle and supportive space where true healing can unfold. Together, we will navigate deeply held fears and beliefs, empowering you to live as your most free, embodied self.

I offer a therapeutic modality called Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP), which is the use of ketamine as a complement to psychotherapy. KAP is a practice that utilizes the benefits of the medication to allow for a loosening of the ego-based mind to support the treatment of trauma, depression, anxiety, OCD, addictions, and other presentations of mental health distress.

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is a holistic modality in which ketamine is used as a complement to psychotherapy to help eligible clients experience more frequent breakthroughs and sustained improvement in symptoms. I support the psychotherapy portion of the experience, while my partnering medical provider’s clinical team supports you on all aspects of medical clearance and safety. This includes determining eligibility, developing a custom treatment plan, prescribing the medicine, and monitoring outcomes. I partner with Journey Clinical, Klarisana, or other local individual prescribers depending on what is most accessible for you.

What is Ketamine-Assisted Therapy?

  • Coaching focuses on non-clinical guidance, personal growth, and self-discovery. In psychedelic coaching, we explore how psychedelics can be used responsibly for insight and transformation, providing preparation and integration support outside of a therapeutic, medically supervised context. Often my coaching clients are seeking the work with the psychedelic medicine(s) (such as Iboga/Ibogaine, 5-MeO-DMT, Ketamine, Ayahuasca, Huachuma, or Psilobycin) in a country where these medicines are legally available and seeking support for their journeys before and after their medicine ceremony. Through a coaching platform, I am able to support clients around the country, as well as internationally.

  • If you’re dealing with complex challenges such as trauma, PTSD, or treatment-resistant depression, Ketamine-Assisted Therapy may be the best option. Therapy provides a safe, medically supervised setting where licensed professionals support your healing journey through a trauma-informed approach, using psychedelics as a therapeutic tool to facilitate meaningful change.

  • Ketamine is a legal, safe and effective medicine used to treat a variety of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety and PTSD. Ketamine has rapidly-acting antidepressant and mood-enhancing effects, which can begin to take effect within 1-2 hrs after treatment and last for up to 4 weeks.

  • We are learning that ketamine works on many systems in the body, beyond the traditional pathways like impacting serotonin. It works by blocking the brain’s NMDA receptors as well as by stimulating AMPA receptors, which are thought to help form new synaptic connections and boost neural circuits that regulate stress and mood. Ketamine has also been shown to enhance overall neuroplasticity for lasting symptom improvement.

These same properties also provide the brain with a high flow of Brain Derived Nootropic Factors (BDNFs) for 7-10 days following the session. Usually, when not using a psychedelic paired with therapy there is no BDNF change, and we are actually working on changing the nervous system at a much slower pace with far less durability of effect in conditions resistant to standard treatments.

Due to the BDNF benefit a unique stage is then created to support robust new neural growth allowing for greater ease in integrating the understanding gained during the KAT appointment, and more easily change thoughts, behaviors, and emotions related to that processing.

Finally, usually known as an anesthetic at high doses, the fractional doses used in psycholitic (KAP) and psychedelic (KAT) doses are supportive for reducing chronic pain and inflammation. When working with KAT for chronic illness and chronic pain, often more information becomes available about how the subconscious mind is relating with this illness/pain state. Opening up this understanding can be extremely helpful for making meaning out of the challenges that one faces while living with Chronic Pain and/or Illness.

  • There are two ways of working therapeutically with ketamine: Ketamine-Assisted Therapy and Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP).

The difference between the two is whether or not we are together in session during the ketamine administration.

In KAT, IV or IM ketamine administration is completed in a clinic under medical supervision and our sessions take place before and after for preparation and integration.

In Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy the route of administration of ketamine is through oral lozenges that you self-administer in either a telehealth session from your home, or in my office, and I am with you through the dosing session for support and integration.

  • Ketamine can be administered in a variety of ways, including IV infusion, intramuscular injection, via nasal spray and using sublingual lozenges.

In my work with Journey Clinical we use the sublingual lozenge form.

I also maintain partnership with Klarisana, where IM Ketamine is offered. Klarisana also accepts Medicaid, United Healthcare and Anthem which may make them an ideal partner should you have insurance benefits.

  • Choosing between IV/IM (intravenous/intramuscular) route of administration ketamine or using lozenges depends on your budget, treatment goals, medical history, and comfort level.

IV/IM delivery offers a more controlled, rapid onset and is often recommended for individuals needing higher precision in dosing, or feel more comfortable with a medical team available onsite.

If you choose this route, we would meet for Preparation and Integration Sessions before and after your Dosing sessions, but would likely not be together during the dosing sessions.

Lozenges, on the other hand, are self-administered and provide a more flexible, gradual experience, making them ideal for working through what arises during the treatment while in session with me.

During your consultation, we’ll explore the best option for you based on your needs and preferences.

  • If you are choosing to work with Lozenges via Journey Clinical, the following information is what you can expect.

    1. Initial consultation with Journey Clinical

You schedule an initial evaluation with a Nurse Practitioner from the Journey Clinical medical team via zoom. They will go over your medical and psychiatric history with you, provide education on the treatment and determine if you are eligible for KAP.

If Journey Clinical’s medical team determines that you are eligible for KAP, they will develop a personalized Ketamine prescription and outcome monitoring plan for you.

Journey Clinical’s medical staff will write a ketamine prescription for you, and a small amount of oral ketamine will be sent to your home, enough for the first 2 KAP sessions. You will be taught to take your vitals and self-administer the ketamine lozenges by Journey Clinical’s medical team in advance of our KAP sessions.

    2. Preparation sessions:

Once you receive your ketamine lozenges, we will schedule time together for our KAP preparation, dosing and integration sessions. Preparation session(s) will be scheduled just like regular therapy sessions prior to the KAP dosing session. The goal of a preparation sessions is to deepen an understanding of your history, align on the process, goals and set intentions for our KAP sessions together.

    3. KAP Dosing Session:

A typical ketamine dosing session lasts between 1.5-2 hours and can remotely via telehealth or in the office.

    * It is important that if we are working via telehealth that you have a person available as a chaperone at home with you during the dosing session. This is a requirement by both my practice and Journey Clinical to support safety. If we are working together in the office, it is vital to know that you cannot drive after the session, as your motor neurons will still be impaired and could lead to an accident. I require a person be there to pick you up, or that you source alternative transportation like with Lyft or Uber.

During a dosing session, you will self-administer your ketamine lozenge in your home or my office. You will be in a comfortable, reclining position wearing an eye mask and listening to music crafted specifically for KAP. Although a KAP dosing session may be largely an internal experience, many people are able to engage psychotherapeutically throughout. I will be present with you the entire time to hold space and provide support as needed.

    4. Integration Sessions:

After our KAP dosing session, we will meet for integration therapy to review the memories, thoughts & insights that arose during your dosing session, and to prepare for the next dosing session.

    5. Follow-up consultations with Journey Clinical:

After our first KAP session, Journey Clinical’s medical team schedules regular follow ups with you to monitor outcomes and prescribe ketamine lozenge refills, as appropriate. The frequency of follow ups depends on your unique treatment plan, at a minimum of once per quarter.

Follow-up Consultations with Journey Clinical :

After our first KAP session, Journey Clinical’s medical team schedules regular follow ups with you to monitor outcomes and prescribe ketamine lozenge refills, as appropriate. The frequency of follow ups depends on your unique treatment plan, at a minimum of once per quarter.

  • If you are choosing to work with IV/IM delivery with Klarisana, the following information is what you can expect after I submit the referral to Klarisana.

    1. Initial consultation with Klarisana

You schedule an initial evaluation with a provider with the Klarisana medical team via zoom. They will go over your medical and psychiatric history with you, provide education on the treatment and determine if you are eligible for KAT.

If Klarisana’s medical team determines that you are eligible for KAT, they will develop a personalized Ketamine prescription and outcome monitoring plan for you.

You would then schedule your first dosing session to occur after we have completed 2 to 3 Preparation sessions. During your Intake Appointment we can discuss the timing of the Prep sessions, as the structure can vary.

    2. Preparation sessions:

Preparation session(s) will be scheduled just like regular therapy sessions prior to the KAT dosing session. The goal of a preparation sessions is to deepen an understanding of your history, align on the process, goals and set intentions for our KAT sessions together.

    3. KAT Dosing Session:

A typical ketamine dosing session lasts between 1.5-2 hours and are completed in one of Klarisana’s locations.

During a dosing session, you will be administered ketamine in the clinic, and supported through visual monitoring for safety via camera. You will be in a comfortable, reclining position wearing an eye mask and listening to music crafted specifically for KAT. Although a KAT dosing session may be largely an internal experience, the clinic employs well-trained providers to hold space and provide support as needed.

    4. Integration Sessions:

After your KAT dosing session, we will meet for an integration therapy session to review the memories, thoughts & insights that arose during your dosing session, and to prepare for the next dosing session. These Dosing and Integration Sessions work in tandem - one dosing session then one integration session - as you work through your goals and intentions until you have reached relief. There is the possibility of additional integration sessions following the end of the dosing and integration cycle.

    4. What Happens Next?

The frequency of maintenance of treatment depends on your unique presentation and goals. We will monitor how you are doing between maintenance cycles.

“I've been battling chronic illness for over 15 years now but it wasn't until I incorporated KAP into my treatment plan that I started to see deeper and lasting improvements both on a mental/emotional level and on a physical level.

Initially, KAP saved my life when I was under an acute emotional crisis and couldn't find my ground, my strength, or my will. After the first session, it was like I went from being enclosed in a small dark box where I saw no options or ways out of my grief, trauma, and illness to suddenly being in a big open field of flowers with light beaming down on me and lots of possibilities and hope.

After continuing KAP regularly over the last year and half, it has allowed me to access and process deeply rooted traumas, limiting beliefs, grief and loss. These are things I could have never accessed in a fully conscious state even after doing EMDR and talk therapy for years.

I went from having a hard time even being able to access my emotions and communicate them correctly to now being able to easily discern how I'm feeling and why and enact change in my behavior or thinking pattern. It allowed me to have the ability to get out of crisis/fight or flight mode and implement the daily emotional, energetic, and spiritual care that continues to keep me making progress and feeling good.

KAP also allowed me to make connections and correlations between my emotional traumas and my physical symptoms. As I've made progress on my emotional body, my chronic illness symptoms have gone way down - I'm experiencing improved energy, improved mental function, lower pain, a more stable endocrine system and many other things. For the first time in 15 years, I'm making real, deep, and sustained progress and getting rid of my chronic infections. My treatments are working better and I'm needing less and less medical care each month.

No amount of physical treatments could have gotten me to the state of health I'm currently in, I needed KAP to help me access deeper reasons why my body was "holding onto" illness. It has truly been a game changer and I cannot recommend it enough.”
